Sushi Was Their First Date, So We Started Them There Again

Chamere and Anthony together at the sushi bar on their planned Fells Point date night

When Chamere and Anthony filled out our questionnaire, one answer kept coming back. Under the food they love, they wrote sushi. Under their go-to comfort date, sushi again. For this couple it is more than a favorite meal. It goes all the way back to the beginning for them.

Four years and a couple of kids later, they still reach for it. So when they won a fully planned night on us, we did not overthink the theme. We started them right where sushi always takes them: at a sushi bar, in their own city, with the harbor a few blocks away.

The couple, in their own words

Chamere and Anthony live in Baltimore. Together four years, parents, and honest about the thing that makes date night hard: budget. They get out about twice a month, and what they wanted was not a splurge. It was something quick and easy, an hour or two that felt like theirs, without the cost hanging over it.

They also told us a story we kept coming back to. Anthony once built Chamere a whole spa at home. Not a gift card to a spa, an actual spa, set up for her. She still brings it up. So when we wrote them a note before the plan, we told them the truth we heard in that: the thoughtful, low-key stuff is the bar for you two, not the price tag.

That became the rule for the whole night. Closeness that costs almost nothing.

The night we planned

We sent them to SushiBruceYa on Aliceanna Street in Fells Point, a fun little sushi bar a few blocks from the water, dinner starting at five. The instruction was simple: order two rolls you have never tried, right next to your usual. Keep one foot in the comfort food and put the other somewhere new. That is the whole date, really.

While the rolls came out, we planted the first keepsake question, the one for Anthony to ask Chamere across the table: what first made you realize you liked me? For two people whose story starts with sushi, that question means a little more when you are back at a sushi bar to answer it.

From there the night opened up, and none of it cost much. They walked three blocks down Broadway to the Fells Point waterfront at dusk and played a game we suggested: score every dog, boat, and outfit you pass out of ten, strongest opinion wins. Somewhere on that promenade we handed Chamere her question for Anthony: what is a little thing I do that you hope I never stop? Four years in, that one still has new answers.

Then a stop at Wonderland, a new bar in the neighborhood built like a 1960s and 70s fever dream, glass dance floor, mirrored ceiling and all. This is a couple whose bar for a great night was a Wu-Tang concert, so one drink and one song on a mirrored dance floor was right in character. We asked them to catch a few seconds of one spin on video, because a night like this is worth being able to press play on later. Gelato from Pitango closed it out, two flavors, split between them, the walk back taken slow on purpose.

The whole evening ran about two hours and came in around the price of dinner for two somewhere fancier. That was the point. Budget was their biggest challenge, so we treated it as part of the romance instead of a limit on it.

What came back to us

A few days later, Chamere and Anthony sent us their photos, and we turned the night into a keepsake they keep forever. The pictures carry it. Two plates of sushi under warm light, rolls they had never ordered sitting right beside the ones they always get. And the two of them at the bar under the warm light, Anthony in his fitted cap, a picture of a night going well.

We did not hand this couple a list of ten date ideas near them. We built one night, for them, out of what they told us. Sushi because it is theirs. A waterfront walk because they said they wanted to sit by the water and talk. A budget kept small on purpose, because that was the real challenge and we respected it. That is the whole idea behind our date nights: you bring what you know about the person you love, and we turn it into a plan you can actually follow, with a keepsake built in so the night does not disappear.

Because a great date usually fades by the next weekend. This one did not. It is written down now, under their favorite photo, in five words they chose themselves.

Sushi was our first date.
